ONN closes the season with four breathtaking orchestral showpieces featuring a musical world of sweeping landscapes, shimmering light, and cinematic grandeur. Portland composer Kenji Bunch’s she flies with her own wings launches the evening with energy and optimism, inspired by Oregon’s state motto and spirit of independence. Anna Clyne’s Masquerade is a whirlwind of energy and elegance, marked by sparkling strings and bold brass, and inspired by the spirit of a grand masked ball. The program culminates with two spectacular Roman tone poems of Italian composer Ottorino Respighi — The Fountains of Rome and The Pines of Rome. Respighi paints vivid musical portraits of Italy’s Eternal City — from sparkling fountains at dawn to majestic pines “that appear in every part of the horizon.” Extraordinarily lush orchestrations, sweeping melodies, and thrilling climaxes make these masterpieces a dazzling showcase for the full power and colors of Orchestra Nova Northwest.
