PORTLAND, OR — Following an extensive national search, Orchestra Nova Northwest (ONN) is thrilled to announce that Adam Eccleston, an internationally acclaimed flutist, educator, and arts leader, has been appointed as its new Executive Director.
A dynamic presence in Portland’s music scene, Eccleston brings not only deep artistic vision and a commitment to education and access, but also extensive experience leading programs, shaping strategy, and building meaningful partnerships. His work reflects a strong capacity for organizational leadership and community connection—skills that will serve ONN well in its next chapter. He succeeds Kevin Irving, who stepped down earlier this year.
“Adam brings a rare blend of artistic excellence, community insight, and creative leadership,” said Chair of the Board Harold Goldstein. “He is not only a nationally acclaimed musician but also a trusted leader within ONN and beyond. His vision is a perfect match for ONN’s mission, and the entire organization—from our musicians to our staff—is thrilled to have him onboard. He’s already working closely with Music Director Steven Byess to shape an exciting season ahead.”
Eccleston is an award-winning soloist and orchestral flutist who has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kurhaus in Germany, and across Europe and North America. A frequent presence on the airwaves, he is the Artist in Residence Emeritus and a radio host and producer at All Classical Radio, where he also chairs the Recording Inclusivity Initiative—a national effort to amplify underrepresented voices in classical music.
In addition to his artistic credentials, Eccleston brings a strong background in nonprofit leadership, strategic planning, and fundraising. He has worked extensively with organizations such as El Sistema USA and Global Leaders Institute, where he pioneered innovative sustainability frameworks for arts professionals and transformed organizational practices through strategic coaching and youth education programs. He has a proven track record of raising close to $800,000 for various nonprofits to support educational research and program development.
Eccleston steps into this new role as ONN launches its 2025–26 season, Throughlines—a compelling lineup of concerts celebrating musical storytelling, connection, and place. He will work closely with Music Director Steven Byess and the ONN board to expand community partnerships, elevate the orchestra’s presence across the Portland metro area, and support the ensemble’s mission of accessible, inclusive performance.
“I’m thrilled to join ONN at such an exciting moment of growth,” said Eccleston. “This orchestra is uniquely committed to innovation, education, and representing the vibrant communities we serve. I’m honored to help shape its next chapter.”
A native New Yorker who grew up in Germany due to his father’s military service, Eccleston studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, State University of New York at Purchase College, and New England Conservatory, earning master’s degrees in both music performance and music education. He later received certification in nonprofit leadership.
His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for ONN—one grounded in artistic excellence, meaningful community connection, and a forward-looking vision for growth and impact.
